Career Path: Software Engineering
Before Coding Temple: Administrative Manager
Before Coding Temple: Production Support Engineer @ Eligo Energy, LLC
I was an Administrative Manager at a non-profit training organization.
The non-profit organization I was working for closed during the pandemic. I loved working for a non-profit and wanted to learn new skills that would allow me to help a non-profit in the future in a way that I could not before. Part of my previous role was data collection and analysis, so I also wanted to supplement my existing knowledge and experience with a bootcamp that included a data segment.
I decided to enroll at Coding Temple because it was the stack that I was most interested in, the cost was competitive, and the schedule with virtual learning fit my needs.
It was a huge amount of information to cover in 10 weeks. I just did the best I could to do coding work outside of class and tried to expand on new concepts when I could, which helped me to better learn some of what we covered each day.
The most valuable lesson from the program for me was probably understanding that it’s ok to leave the program not knowing everything, that it’s ok to search online for solutions, and that most new developers will have a learning curve and a lot of questions.
The instructors, other students, and being introduced to new online resources.
Shortly before my program ended, I was in contact with a developer who was looking to fill a developer intern position, which I accepted. Although the internship involved working in a different language than what I learned at Coding Temple, I was able to apply the general coding concepts I learned in the bootcamp to the work I was doing in my new role.
Upon completion of the internship, I was hired by the same company as a Production Support Engineer. I hope to transition into a Junior Developer role next, but I’m also interested in building skills to work toward a Quality Assurance Engineer role and would also like to continue practicing with the data tools I learned at Coding Temple to become a more well-rounded developer.
Coding Temple met my expectations. I think I was most surprised by the competency of the Coding Temple team. Every instructor that I had the opportunity to learn from thoroughly understood the concepts we were covering and had an impressive ability to answer questions on the spot. Student support and career services provided by Nicole and Marlene were incredibly helpful. Both are very supportive and great at what they do. The program is well organized and I never felt like I didn’t know who to go to if I had a question or needed help with something. I like that they update offerings based on changing industry needs and student feedback. They do a great job!
Be prepared to put in work outside of the regular class time. In my opinion you will get the most out of the program by applying the concepts you learned during the day to the homework each night.
